The Celtics moved the ball well early on, jumping out to a quick 11-2 lead. Kevin Garnett (20 points) played stifling defense and grabbed nine of his 13 rebounds in the opening quarter. Rajon Rondo (18 points, 14 assists) also got off to a good start, hitting three of his first four shots.
However, the Celtics became sluggish. After a 14-4 Washington run capped off by a Kevin Seraphin layup, the Celtics found themselves down by one.
But the Celtics responded with yet another run of their own. After receiving a razor-sharp outlet pass from Garnett, Leandro Barbosa laid it in to give Boston a 21-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, Washington took a 38-34 lead on a barrage of three-pointers from Martell Webster, Jannero Pargo and Bradley Beal.
