Valerie June’s voice is an instrument unlike any other. Her new album, Pushin’ Against a Stone, is very good. The album opener, “Workin’ Woman Blues,” is stunning. Listen as the layers build, the percussion sets the table, and then the horns come in. Ooh. The rest of the album slips between American roots music, Appalachian folk, blues, and soul.
