RIP Maya Angelou: An Inspiring Soul

I remember reading All God’s Children Need Traveling Shoes and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in high school. I think it was my Creative Writing teacher Lucille Burt (a wonderful teacher and poet who told my mother that I had the worst case of “senior-itis” she had ever seen) who assigned readings from All God’s Children.  I remember thinking that I’d love to go to Ghana. When I started college that fall, I considered taking a semester abroad Sophomore year in Ghana, which was offered at Wesleyan. My college path didn’t take the Ghana exit, but I’ll get there someday. And when I do, I’ll think of Angelou’s pilgrimage to Ghana in the ’60’s.
