The Thing

stock-photo-21101648-tuna-sandwich-on-a-white-plate“Remember that thing?”

“Which one? You mean the thing that made me laugh?”

“No, the other thing..”

“(pauses) You mean…the thing from last week, with the guy?”

“Nope. The thing from last year.”

“Hmm. What are you talking about? Stop with the games.”

“The thing we used to talk about. It keeps coming back to my mind.”

“Your friend? The one you won’t talk to?”

“No, the other thing.”

“How about you just tell me what you’re talking about?”

“I can’t do that.”

“Why not?”

“They won’t let me.”

“Whose they?”

“…………..”

“I’m going to go make a sandwich.”

“What kind? I’d eat a sandwich.”

“Tuna. I’ll make you one.”

“Oh. I don’t want tuna.”

***

(Takes big bite out of tuna sandwich.)

“Are you tired of it?”

“Tired of what?”

“The thing?”

“No…because I don’t know what thing you’re talking about.”

“You can be tired of it. It’s okay.”

(Silence. Takes a bite of the sandwich. Eats a few chips)

“I’d rather forget about it myself.”

“Finally.”

“Finally, what?’

“Finally you said what you’ve been trying to say the whole time.”

(Silence. Clock ticking)

“Why don’t you just say what it is you wish you could forget.”

“You have to say it first.”

“What are you talking about? Who is making these rules up?”

“I’m making these rules up, I guess…”

“Well, stop making them up then.”

“You’ve got to open the door…and then we can talk about it.”

“But I don’t know what’s in your mind. I don’t know what you want me to remember.”

“Today would have been the day we left.” (looks out the window at the dusky sky).

“Oh…right.”

“We would have been at the airport.”

“And here we are. No trip.”

“No trip.”

“We can still do it.”

“What do you mean? When can we do it?”

“We can make a plan.”

(Silence.)

“Too many plans.”
